NE167: Family Business Viability in Economically Vulnerable Communities

Statement of Issues and Justification

Family businesses are the heart of the American economy, contributing a major portion of the country's production, employment and income. The emphasis of most research on family businesses focuses on the economic aspects of business ownership and less on the interaction of the family-business relationships. Of equal concern is the relationship between the family, business, and the community. How do the factors of society, economics and environment of a community affect family processes and business viability?

For many communities, particularly rural communities, a partial answer to this question is through the development of viable family businesses that not only support their owners (and in turn their families), but also provide good jobs for other wage earners. These relationships point to the priority that must be given to the examination of the ways businesses, families, and communities mutually relate to create the best conditions for success from all three perspectives.
