- The meeting this year will be held at the Holiday Inn Chicago O'Hare (phone 773-693-5800). A block of rooms has been reserved at a discounted rate of $89/night plus 13% tax if you refer to the NC-1040 booking name. The hotel offers both free parking and a free shuttle to/from O'Hare. As Gale pointed out last year, "Please recognize that if you fly into Midway there is no shuttle and it will take about 1 hour to drive between the 2 airports."
Like last year, we opted to skip the in-room continental breakfast, so we'll all be on our own there. With coffee breaks both days, lunch on Monday, and the meeting room, the "registration" fee for the meeting should be about $75 per person. Please bring a checkbook when you come and we will have receipts ready to go. We will also aim to enjoy a nice dinner as a group on Monday night, so be thinking about where you'd like to go that evening.
We will plan to meet at the hotel from 8 am to 5 pm on Monday, October 25, and from 8 am - noon on Tuesday, October 26. We will probably spend most of that time for individual station reports. However, it was also pointed out that it has been a number of years since the committee has set aside time for a "methods" presentation or some kind of special focus session to help members in their research programs. I have not come up with any brilliant ideas for this type of session, but please send thoughts my way and I will see what we can put together.
ANNUAL REPORTS: I ask that you send your report in Word format (in addition to a pdf, if you wish) to make it easier for me to compile the committee report. For those able to attend the meeting, we typically bring 20 printed copies to hand out during the meeting. Your report should include 5 key components:
1) A report of progress - basically, your research findings over the past year that apply to the project. Be sure to indicate which objective your results apply to (go here for objectives: http://nimss.umd.edu/homepages/outline.cfm?trackID=8816).
2) One or more impact statements assessing the effects of your findings on the research community or society at large.
3) Planned research for the coming year.
4) Publications, including refereed articles, conference proceedings, and popular press over the past year.
5) Current funding, including source, amount of funding, and length of each project.
All of these components are important for us to put together a strong annual committee report, which helps us to justify our continued support from USDA. Please let me or another member know if you would like an example report to look at.
